Return Visits To True North In Coburg

True North in Coburg is a place I return to often– good food, friendly staff and right near where I do most of my shopping. I’ve blogged about True North before, but as I’ve gone back so many more times, I thought it was time for an update. Annoyingly there were a few times I forgot to take my camera.

The True North menu offers something for everyone with lots of vegan-option icons. In the past I reviewed the Reuben sandwich with a thumbs up. On my camera-less visits, I’ve also enjoyed the black bean tacos for dinner with a side of thick cut fries with lime aioli which appears on the current dinner menu.

From the current Breakfast-Lunch menu is the vegan Chipotle Chicken sandwich (shown below). True North make some great sandwiches. I’ve also had a couple other fab sandwiches which aren’t on the menu any more. One was the Hot Poppy and another had, IIRC, a big mushroom with some tofu and Korean bbq flavours. They’ve all been really good and full of flavour.

Another current Breakfast-Lunch meal are the cherry pancakes. Lovely and fluffy with a a coconut based cream on top:True North Coburg vegan cherry pancakes

The counter always has some sweet treats with vegan options like muffins and biscuity-cookie delights. Other times there are cakes and this is the vegan lamington cake. The serving size was pretty generous and I couldn’t finish it because I was stuffed:

What I also like about True North are the events they hold. Truthfully I haven’t been able to go yet but they’re so awesome looking I just stalk all the photos on Facebook. There are Pie or Die nights, featuring pies (some vegan) from Blackberry Belle Pies. There’s Thursday night $10 curry+beer/soft drink and Royal Rumble Sundays with old school 1980s WWF wrestling action and burritos. There was also a Trash and Treasure market back in May with Nadia’s No-Dogs vegan hotdogs.

Coming up is the all vegan Death To Summer- Eternal Winter Feast on September 17th. Tickets available now.

True North is fine for kids. I’ve taken mine a couple of times and have seen parents and toddlers in there too. My kids have fun looking at all the knick knacks around the place (cats!!!) and a visit to the toilet is worth it for a Slimer statue and Mr. T poster.

A Return To True North in Coburg

True North Cafe Coburg

I met up with Johanna from Green Gourmet Giraffe yesterday at True North in Coburg. I pretty much have a plan to try as many of the vegan options as quickly as possible, in case they change the menu. Because my Reuben sandwich there was so good, I don’t want to risk missing out on anything!

This time I ordered the veganisable chorizo and haloumi Hot Poppy. I asked what the vegan haloumi alternative was and I was shown a tub of what looked like sliced Cheezly (unless another vegan cheese comes in those Cheezly-shaped tubes?). Anyway, works for me! This was another great sandwich, and the chorizo may have been by Redwood as I’ve bought the Redwood chorizo before and this seemed exactly the same. Johanna ordered the Reuben and both our sandwiches had a small handful of corn chips on the side. Interior shot:

I wasn’t sure whether to update my first True North post with this second sandwich, or leave it for the next What I Ate, but then I decided this pumpkin was so awesome that it needed a place of its own. Because IT’S GOT WHAT IT TAKES!

Is there any meal you recommend I try next? How about sweets? And the big one: David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar?!

A Reuben Sandwich At True North in Coburg

truenorth4

True North has been on my mind for so long. Since April in fact, ever since Johanna from Green Gourmet Giraffe blogged about her Reuben sandwich. I’m often in the area, though never really with the opportunity to sit down somewhere and have a quiet meal. Well folks, let me tell you that after my sandwich today, I’m gonna be going back as often as I can.

I went at a non-busy time and gave the menu a quick glance. The veganisable meals do sound quite good (check out the menu here) but I was set on trying the vegan Reuben so I didn’t spend too much time with the menu. I’ve never had a Reuben sandwich before and this was a bit of a cautious experiment, because even as a non-vegan I hated Reuben ingredients like corned beef (blergh) and sauerkraut. But hey, I like mustard.

True North has a relaxed vibe and I was very happy with the friendly, prompt service. Music was playing at a decent volume, staff were welcoming and I was happy to just sit there taking a few pics:

My Reuben sandwich came out in good time. At a glance, I could tell I was going to enjoy this. The bread was perfect, with bits of mustard oozing through (I had to keep wiping my hands but who cares, this was one great sandwich). Honestly, before I ordered I was expecting to be kinda ho hum about it, given the vegan pastrami (I always hated pastrami) and the sauerkraut. But it was delicious. One of the nicest sandwiches I’ve ever eaten.

Close up!

True North is located right at the intersection of Sydney Road and Munro Street (about one or two shops away):

I will definitely head back there as soon as I can to work my way through the vegan options. But I might get another Reuben before all that.

True North has also been visited by Where’s The Beef? and The Good Hearted.
